Wildscreen Ocean Festival crowdfunder launched
Bristol charity Wildscreen launches crowdfunding campaign to bring free ocean festival to Bristol this October
With a diverse line-up of events from street art to sculptures, outdoor photography exhibitions to pedal-powered cinemas, Wildscreen’s WITNESS THE WILD Festival will submerge Bristol in all things ocean from 30 September to 8 October 2017.
Community groups, visual artists, scientists, wildlife filmmakers and photographers will work together to transform places such as the Bearpit and public spaces in BS5 into oceanic-themed sanctuaries, giving thousands of city residents the opportunity to learn about marine species and habitats and discover how to help protect them.
People and businesses are being asked to support the £3,000 crowdfunding campaign to help Wildscreen deliver the following free events as part of the Festival:
- Marine-themed art murals by local artists in The Bear pit and BS5
- Community sculpture workshops with local artists
- Pedal-powered outdoor wildlife film screenings in parks and public spaces
- A 24/7, fully sustainable outdoor wildlife photography exhibition
- Concerts using recycled instruments
Rewards for crowdfunder donors include limited edition marine-themed People’s Republic of Stokes Croft mugs, tickets to an exclusive future food event created by Michelin-star chef Josh Eggleton and VIP seats at the outdoor wildlife film screenings.
The first WITNESS THE WILD festival took place in Bristol in 2016, as part of the biennial Wildscreen Festival. It was the charity’s biggest public outreach programme in its 34 year history, reaching over 45,000 people through a packed programme of pedal-powered wildlife film screenings, endangered species street art and an open-air, environmentally friendly 24/7 photography exhibition.
Donations to support Witness the Wild are also in with the chance of being topped up by the #BetterBristol match-fund campaign which aims to support and promote the activities of organisations in the city with a passion for positive change. It is delivered by Bristol Green Capital Partnership community interest company who are investing £45,000 in local ideas and projects that will contribute to making Bristol a sustainable city with a high quality of life for all. The Better Bristol match-fund campaign will help to make these ideas and projects a reality by offering coaching and support to crowdfunders, and awarding grants of between £3,000 and £4,000 to eligible projects who have first gained support ‘from the crowd’ by crowdfunding the first 50% of their overall target.

We’ve chosen to go water-based in 2017 because even though half of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of the sea, it’s suffering from a bad case of out of site out of mind.
Half of every breath we take comes from the ocean, yet humans are having detrimental impacts on it, from overfishing to plastics pollution, but we can all take little actions to help protect one of our most precious resources. Through crowdfunding people can help us bring the ocean to our home city this autumn so as many people as possible have the opportunity to fall in love with the ocean and be empowered to do their bit to help protect it, and us.”
