Can you do the best work of your life outside London?

Published on Monday, 8th May 2017

Like it or not, here in the South West we work at one remove from the supposed centre of our industry. But, as we also know, we’re lucky to live in a flourishing creative hub. Agencies can pursue their own agenda and feed off a more diverse community, and of course planners benefit too. They have no need to, as Ogilvy & Mather suggested their teams needed to post-Brexit, ‘get out there’. They’re already here. We’re outside the bubble.

Nevertheless, a perception lingers that the bigger agencies have the bigger budgets, and perhaps do the better (or at least more garlanded) work. Adland may envy our work-life balance but they also might, deep down, assume we’ve traded in our ambition. But is that really true? Isn’t it possible that being outside the bubble offers planners and agencies a competitive advantage? Do we have to be in a global city to do world-class work?

To answer these questions we seek the views of two speakers from two creative and digital centres beyond the South West:

Phil Adams is currently Planning Director at Cello Signal (formerly Blonde) in Edinburgh, and has previously been MD of The Leith Agency. He’s a Drum columnist and one of the smartest strategic minds on the national block.

Matt Desmier runs Wise Old Uncle, a consultancy for clients and agencies based in Bournemouth, a regional hub whose digital growth rivals that of Bristol and Bath. He is also the force of nature behind the wildly successful Silicon Breach conferences.
