A look back at Bristol Media 2016

As 2016 and all its trials and tribulations comes to an end, we take a look back at what we have achieved at Bristol Media over the last year. 

First up, we published almost 400 articles on our website which goes from strength to strength attracting over 135,000 page views per month and over 14,000 unique visitors. In addition we gained over 3,000 followers on Twitter (@bristol_media) making 30,000 followers in total giving an average of 8k impressions per day.  Not bad for a regional organisation when compared to some national membership bodies.

We enjoyed working with two of our member agencies to deliver sold out workshops.  Our Account Management workshop with Zone and our Digital Project Management workshop with True Digital both sold out within a matter of days, and so we ran them both again - a total number of 90 people trained.  We're hoping to re-run these in 2017.

Our Media Tuesday MeetUp events continue attract the most wonderfully diverse group each month.  We've held eight of these during the year with around 70 people at each one.  We also have 1300 members of our MeetUp Group.  Why not join and be the first to find out about these monthly get togethers?  "Great time with so many interesting people".

We have published four editions of 2 Degrees West, a quarterly publication which pulls together all the stats and quotes we can find about Bristol's creative and tech sector.  We also published our most comprehensive Barometer report to date which showed us that business confidence was up compared with the same period last year with 75% of respondents feeling more optimistic about their business prospects than in the previous year.  It will be interesting to compare these figures with the Barometer 2017 following the Brexit vote.

Our Vision Conference held in May at the Anson Rooms was also our most successful to date with a plethora of world class speakers including Mark Curtis (Fjord), Mark Borkowski, Margaret Heffernan, Julia Hobsbawm, Melanie Cooke (Sapient Nitro) and Jason Romeyko (Saatchi & Saatchi) to name but a few.  Over 300 delegates had a choice of 24 speakers in total, tried out VR experiences from Play Nicely, Opposable Games and students from Weston College and were treated to delicious food by local caterers Papadeli.  Our next Vision conference takes place on 14th November - a date for your diary!

We launched our presence on Instagram (@bristolmediagroup) at Vision and are delighted to be working with Bristol Igers Moderator @porthjess who has an astonishing 38,400 followers.  Check out her beautiful photos of vintage cars and Bristol doors.  (Jess is running an Instagram workshop for us in January but sorry, you guessed it, it's already sold out!)  There'll be more...

We then started to think about our Bristol & Bath delegation to the world's largest interactive festival South by South West in Austin Texas.  Chris Thurling was keen to take a group out again but this time wanted to do it differently.  So we launched a crowdfunding campaign on Fundsurfer to raise the funds for a young person to be mentored by Chris and a Creative Director for a period of five months, culminating in a trip to SXSW.  We announced our lucky but well deserved winner in mid-November and Jasmine Thompson heads out to Austin with the 22 strong delegation in March 2017.

We ran our first Business Breakfast in association with Business West in June, followed by another in September.  These events are by invitation only and are aimed at MDs and agency heads who discuss three topics facing the industry over a sumptuous Bordeaux Quay breakfast.  To date over 50 people have attended and there will be many more of these events held throughout 2017.

Bristol was the first city outside London to run Social Media Week in November and we were at the heart of it.  Over 1400 tickets were sold to 46 events with speakers from Twitter, Buzzfeed, Facebook and Glassdoor. Sessions were dedicated to YouTube, LinkedIn, Snapchat and Instagram and Aardman, Yogscast, Yahoo and Arthritis Research UK shared transformational case studies.

We also began our commitment to Bristol's fantastic TV/Film/Animation community by supporting the 22nd Encounters Short Film Festival.  Members were treated to some of the highlights of the festival during the launch event and we held an industry breakfast to discuss the creative and cultural future of the city with Stephanie Marshall, Head of Regional and Local Programmes for the BBC in the West and Cllr Estella Tinknell.  We were also a Media Partner for the week long Wildscreen Festival which attracts hundreds of wildlife film makers, photographers and conservationists from across the globe.  And last week Films @59, Aspect Film and Video, and Rogue State Media gave us a fascinating insight into working with drones at our 'Introduction to Drones' event with Apple Cabot Circus.  (This was also sold out, but we hope to hold another in the New Year).

It's been quite a year but there is so much to look forward to next year too.  Thank you so much to all our loyal members and partners who continue to support us to deliver the good work.
