Mr B & Friends has arrived in Bristol and is open for business.

Situated in Bristol’s Temple Quarter in a stunning new workspace, Mr B & Friends is a story of success. Our move to Bristol heralds a real step-change for the agency. We’re upping the ante and are now looking for a senior agency professional to join our brilliant team and lead the agency to sustained growth and further success.

Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a very big role for a candidate who is looking to impact an already successful agency at the highest level.

Person specification

The core objective of the Business Director (BD) role is to drive value for clients and growth for the agency.

Reporting to the CEO, the BD will focus on generating agency growth through business development (organic and new) and driving profitability into the business.

Value will be created for clients through consultative solutions-oriented sales, ensuring that clients’ commercial objectives are central to conversations, and agency services (direct or indirect) are relevant and effective.

The BD will be central to the agency’s commercial success and a driving force in client satisfaction and loyalty.

Specific requirements:

The BD role carries three core responsibilities:

Senior Client Partner:

Working across the entire client portfolio, the BD will provide a senior consultative engagement with clients and deliver agency services and solutions to help achieve business and marketing objectives.

The BD will be fluent in branding, marketing, digital and customer experience and will be able to understand complex business, brand and marketing issues. They will be able to ‘think on their feet’ and provide credible and relevant consultation, with the experience to be able to formulate workable methodologies that provide an outstanding service to our clients and provide direction for our Account Directors.

Business Development:

The BD will spearhead our new business strategy. Working in concert with the CEO, the BD will formulate the client attraction strategy and activate through the agency’s Marketing Manager and New Business Manager.

The business development plan will consist of three elements:

Inbound – qualification and management of enquiries.

Outbound – identification and approach of key targets.

Fame-making – developing and building upon our already solid reputation through PR and marketing.

Commercial:

Ensuring that the agency operates at optimum value for clients and returns.

The role also has a number of secondary objectives:

Senior Management Team:

The BD will operate at SMT level and will attend, report and contribute to weekly SMT meetings and monthly Board meetings. The role of the SMT is to operationally deliver the strategy for the agency that is set by the Board.

Mentorship and training of direct reports:

Providing leadership and inspiration to everyone in the agency is key, however none more than the BD’s direct reports. Initially these will be our two Account Directors, who each run a portfolio of client business. The BD will also have the New Business Manager and Marketing Manager reporting in. It will be the BD’s responsibility to provide ‘on the job’ coaching and recognition of personal development needs.

Cultural development:

The BD will be an ambassador and shining light for the agency. They will embody our three cultural values:

You will evangelise these values and behaviours and position Mr B & Friends as the agency to work with and for.

Person specification:

You will be an agency professional with at least 10 years experience gained in notable advertising, integrated marketing, brand consultancy or digital agencies. Or preferably a combination of these disciplines.

It’s crucial that you will have held senior positions in either Client Service, Strategy and Planning or Business Development and will be able to provide anecdotal and reference-able evidence of impacting agency growth and client satisfaction.

You’re an excellent communicator, whether that’s one to one, one to many, in person, in writing or using technology. You’ll also be great at proposal writing, crafting pitch decks, pricing proposals or Work Statements. And, you’ll be the best negotiator we have, ensuring the very best solutions for the best terms.

You will hold a Marketing or Business degree and will demonstrate a thirst for learning and knowledge. You will be interested in business and the creative industries as well as being well-read and able to converse on topics such as the economy, current affairs, politics, and culture.

You will have a positive frame of mind, be a problem solver and keen to impress those you engage with. However, you will also be a team player and will enable others – possibly less senior – the chance to shine. You enjoy helping others and will enjoy other people’s success.

You are a self starter, will be clear on what the business expects of this role and will be accountable for outcomes.
